It happened. I talk about it from time to time, but it's been a long time since it actually happened. I was at the farmer's market and there was a really sweet couple next to me looking at all the produce and he said to her, "Winter squash? But it's only August. What's going on?" And I didn't say a word.
I did giggle inside because it's good to remember that we grow glorious squash and it ripens or it gets ready or it gets picked off the vine towards It's the end of summer and the beginning and even in the middle of fall, but it's to eat in the winter time. That's why they call it winter squash.
Summer squash is full of water and flavor and nutrients and color, but winter squash lasts all through the cold months and keeps us warm, fed and happy. Savoring Sonoma, I'm Clark Wolf for KRCB.
