In 1945, in a little Spanish town, a bunch of kids started a food fight. It was hilarious. It was fun. It relieved a lot of tension. And since that time, Tomatina has become an international classic. It just turned 80.
And what the heck is it? It's when a town comes together and people come from out of town and pay a small fee and for 1 hour, they throw ripe tomatoes at each other. They go crazy. It is absolutely a red mess. And at the end of it, everybody feels better and cleans up and leaves the town cleaner than they found it, which is always a good idea when you're dealing with food.
So, we have a lot of extra heirloom tomatoes and I'm wondering in this crazy world, do we need a food fight or just a good salad? Savoring Sonoma, I'm Clark Wolf for KCRB.
