I love knowing a little bit about the origin of tomatoes. They're from South America and they were originally yellow and pear-shaped. They were cultivated and enjoyed in Mexico and then the Spanish brought them to Europe where a lot of people would not eat them because they reminded them of another little fruit that was poisonous.
Over time, we have fallen in love with tomatoes and as someone who spent a lot of time in the east of the United States. I'm used to waiting a long time for a good tomato, sometimes until September. This year, we've had a cool, long, slow spring and summer, and now tomatoes are perfect, gorgeous, and absolutely delicious. I'm going to go have some tomatoes.
Savoring Sonoma, I'm Clark Wolf for KRCB.
